The end of Gray

The Assens, Denmark shipyard called me in London and asked: “Mr Jones, can I go into the forest and cut three trees?” All three freshly cut 60-70 ft trees were brought across from Denmark, strapped to the deck, and stepped in London.

I made the top, bottom and crosstrees in the Canada Dock in London’s East End (now mostly filled in), while a rigger, Wally Buchanan, made the rigging.

The masts were stepped on deck in steel cups - too good a fit because we lost a mast years later and it levered the cup making a big hole in our deck.
